More than one module: the system assembly for demanding sites
High snow and wind loads, hail impact and significant temperature fluctuations affect the entire PV system. What matters is the coordinated assembly of the module, frame, mechanical interface and substructure. AB NETCOM is developing a mechanical heavy-duty system solution for large-format HJT modules with steel frames.
Development objectives
Developed for challenging sites
The aim is a robust, verifiable and installation-ready overall solution for large ground-mounted plants as well as highland and alpine applications. Large industrial and commercial roofs will be included as a second core segment on a project-specific basis.
Development objectives: controlled transfer of loads, reduction of load peaks, consideration of thermal movement, as well as support for maintenance, interchangeability and traceable partner installation.
The material advantage of GRP
The development concept considers sun-exposed mechanical components at possible surface temperatures of up to +100 °C – significantly above the usual datasheet ranges for modules. The suitability of the overall system must be confirmed through thermal assessment as well as temperature cycling and functional tests.
The increase from a 5’400 Pa datasheet test load to a 13’000 Pa system design case is intended to be achieved with approximately 9–10 kg of additional weight per module – comparable reinforcement in steel would be significantly heavier; this is precisely where the material advantage of GRP lies.
Design, material and engineering details will be disclosed exclusively as part of the confidential project process. Intellectual property rights have been filed.
System assembly
What the system assembly is intended to achieve
Distribute loads over a broad area
Transfer snow and ice loads over a broad area through the frame into the mounting structure.
Dampen hail energy
Dampen hail energy rather than absorbing it rigidly.
Accommodate thermal movement
Accommodate thermal expansion differences between steel, composite material and the mounting structure.
Replace modules without dismantling
Replace modules without dismantling adjacent modules.
Important notice. All stated values are development and test targets, not confirmed system properties and not a guarantee or supply commitment. No testing or certification of the system assembly has taken place to date.
Planned testing pathway
SPF Testing at the Institute for Solar Technology of OST in Rapperswil-Jona
SPF is one of the world's most renowned institutes in the field of solar technology and advanced solar testing. SPF Testing is internationally recognised as a test laboratory by the Swiss Accreditation Service SAS and is a recognised testing body for the Swiss Hail Register.
AB NETCOM intends to coordinate the scope of testing and certification with SPF Testing at the Institute for Solar Technology of OST – Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences in Rapperswil-Jona. The published testing services include hail and impact testing, mechanical load testing with the specified mounting hardware, and snow load testing on solar installations. AB NETCOM is seeking a long-term technical cooperation.

Planned test scope
Hail test
Impact testing of the system assembly with hailstones in accordance with the Hail Register methodology; target class HW 5.
Mechanical load test
Static pressure and suction loads with the specified mounting hardware; design case 13’000 Pa, extreme case up to 15’000 Pa.
Snow load and temperature cycling test
Sustained load under cold conditions, uneven load distribution, and the behaviour of the damping elements.
Functional testing and documentation
Electrical safety after loading, installation and maintenance procedures, and a test report for project partners.
Timeline
Target schedule
- End of 2026 / beginning of 2027Completion of the testing and certification programme. Completion of the planned testing and certification programme with SPF Testing.
- 1st quarter of 2027Certified system solution for initial projects. If the schedule proceeds as planned, the certified system solution should be available for initial projects in the first quarter of 2027 (target horizon: end of February 2027).
- as early as todayPilot and reference projects with the standard module. By then, pilot and reference projects with the standard module up to hail class 3–4 will already be feasible.
Important notice. Cooperation or a testing assignment will only exist following a separate agreement. No testing or certification has taken place to date. All values stated are development and test targets, not confirmed system properties and not a guarantee or commitment to supply.
